How To Prevent Stretch Marks From Pregnancy

If you are trying to find out how to prevent stretch marks from pregnancy, you are already on the right road because PREVENTION is the key to minimizing stretch marks.

What Cause Stretch Marks?

Lady using a stretch mark productStretch marks simply occur when your body grows faster than your skin can keep up. When this happens, the elastic fibers just underneath the outer layer can break. This can be due to pregnancy or gaining weight but either way the results are the same. The most common places to get them during pregnancy are on the tummy, breasts, and hips. These marks usually turn more white or silvery but may start out looking more purple or reddish in color.

Are Stretch Marks Genetic?

A lot of women want to know if getting stretch marks is genetic and the answer is both yes and no. Pretty much – if your mother got them you will most likely get them. However, be aware that overall, about 90% of women get stretch marks whether it runs in their family or not. Several things can affect whether you get stretch marks:

  • Rate of your weight gain
  • Size of your baby
  • Having multiple babies
  • If the women in your family tend to get them
  • The type of skin you have

Never Assume You Will Not Get Stretch Marks

I have prenatal clients who come in who have more than one child already and they will proudly announce they have never gotten stretch marks. I always caution them to use a stretch mark product because even though you do not get them with the first pregnancy, there is always the chance you will get them with a subsequent pregnancy. For the most part, preventing stretch marks is much easier than trying to get rid of them once they are already there and treating them while they are in the purple or reddish stage (which is usually while you are pregnant) is best, whenever possible.

Practical Things You Can Do to Help Prevent Stretch Marks

Depending on who you are talking to you can get a whole list of things to do during your pregnancy to help prevent stretch marks. Overall, you will want to think in terms of doing more than one thing and if you realize that preventing stretch marks is both an internal and external fight, you can’t go wrong. To prevent stretch marks as much as possible:

  • Take Vitamin C because this vitamin helps your body to develop collagen. Collagen is just a type of protein and it helps to keep skin elastic, smooth, plump, and healthy in appearance.
  • Stay hydrated – You want to drink a LOT of water on a daily basis.
  • Take a good prenatal vitamin.
  • Consume dark green veggies.  Vegetables such as kale, spinach, asparagus, cabbage, and collards all help the body to produce collagen.
  • Use a good stretch mark cream or oil.  These various products help to hydrate the skin and increase its elasticity so it can more easily accommodate stretching.

Best Stretch Mark Removal Product

When it comes to dealing with stretch marks, the best course of action is PREVENTION. I recommend that my prenatal massage clients use a product twice per day. This along with the other tips above will go a long way in keeping your skin more elastic and helping your skin to keep up as your body changes and minimize any stretch marks. However, if you were not able to use a product your entire pregnancy, the best thing to do is get started right away with a daily regimen to deal with any stretch marks. Even if you had your baby and you do not see stretch marks you should use a good product to give your skin a lot of love because it needs it at this point.

You will want to have enough product to apply to your hips, stomach, breasts, buttocks, and thighs twice per day. Most of these products will reduce the appearance of any stretch marks and make them less noticeable. If you treat your skin while you are still pregnant then you are doing the very most to prevent getting them in the first place. Here are some of the products I recommend to my clients:

Clarins Stretch Mark Control + Clarins Body Treatment Oil – These two products work well together in preventing stretch marks.

Spoiled Mama Stretch Mark Prevention Kit – I like this one because it is organic and can be used both during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Strexderma – This product is very effective and post-pregnancy seems to also have a tightening effect.

Pregnancy Stretch Marks Belly Kit – This set makes a really nice gift because it contains a hydrating soap and contains some nice soothing and calming ingredients for overall well-being.

Feel free to comment below and let me know some of your favorite tips and products for dealing with stretch marks. I want to hear from you.
